Understanding QRIS as the Digital Payment Standard in Indonesia

Amid the rapid advancement of technology and changes in consumer behavior, digital payment systems have increasingly become a primary necessity in daily economic activities. Non-cash transactions are now more favored due to their convenience, speed, and security. One form of innovation in digital payment systems that continues to be developed in Indonesia is QRIS.

QRIS, or Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard, was introduced as a solution to unify various QR code-based payment methods from different payment service providers. Established by Bank Indonesia and the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI), QRIS aims to create a more efficient, inclusive, and accessible digital payment ecosystem for all levels of society.

What is QRIS?

QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) is the national QR code standard developed by Bank Indonesia in collaboration with ASPI. Its purpose is to integrate various QR code-based payment systems, which were previously fragmented, so they can be used universally across Indonesia. With a single QRIS code, merchants or business owners can accept payments from various digital wallet applications or mobile banking services that have been integrated.

QRIS technology enables fast, practical, and secure payment processes simply by scanning the QR code. It is not only intended for the formal sector but is also encouraged for use in the informal sector, such as street vendors, MSMEs, and even donations in places of worship, to expand financial inclusion in Indonesia.

History and Background of QRIS

Before QRIS was implemented, each digital payment service provider had its own QR code. This created inefficiencies because merchants had to provide multiple QR codes from each provider, which was inconvenient and confusing for customers.

To address this fragmentation, Bank Indonesia and ASPI officially launched QRIS on August 17, 2019. The goal was to unify QR-based payment systems to make them interoperable, meaning a single QR code could be used for all payment applications. This policy simplified transactions, improved efficiency, and reached more business operators across Indonesia.

Since its launch, QRIS has continued to evolve, including enhancements in features and coverage. Its implementation is also supported by regulations that encourage all payment service providers to adopt this standard.

Types of QRIS

In its application, QRIS has several main types tailored to transaction needs in the field:

QRIS Static
QRIS Static is a printed QR code used manually. Typically, it is displayed at store fronts or cashier counters. Customers simply scan the QR code and enter the payment amount. This type is commonly used by small and micro businesses.

QRIS Dynamic
QRIS Dynamic is a QR code automatically generated by the system at the time of the transaction. The payment amount is already embedded in the QR, so customers only need to scan it without entering the amount manually. This type is widely used by medium to large businesses with integrated cashier systems.

QRIS Cross Border
QRIS Cross Border allows cross-border transactions using the QRIS standard. Through cooperation between countries, such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, users can make international payments simply by scanning a QR code that has been technically and legally aligned. This is an important step in integrating payment systems within the ASEAN region.

Benefits of QRIS for Consumers

The use of QRIS offers several tangible benefits for consumers, including:

  • Faster and more practical transactions
No need to carry cash or calculate change. With just a mobile phone, transactions can be completed in seconds.

  • Supports various payment applications
QRIS can be used with multiple digital wallet applications or mobile banking services without needing to download additional apps.

  • Safer and more hygienic
Reduces the risk of losing cash and minimizes physical contact during transactions.

  • Automatically recorded transactions
Helps consumers check transaction history and manage personal finances.

Benefits of QRIS for Businesses

For business operators, QRIS provides convenience and efficiency with the following benefits:

  • Accepts multiple payment methods with a single QR
No need for multiple systems or machines from different providers.

  • Lower operational costs
No need for EDC machines or other additional devices.

  • Faster and more efficient transactions
Reduces queues and increases customer satisfaction.

  • Automatic transaction recording
